IDEA Lab - Integrated Design and Engineering Applications Lab - investigates computer-based engineering methods and tools to produce technically valid projects. It works to innovate the selection processes of technical solutions for the design and optimization of industrial products / processes, also as an expression of technical creativity.
IDEA Lab (previously: La.P.I.S - Integrated Design and Simulation Laboratory) investigates the following research topics:

Integrated design and simulation for the development of new products and processes:
Study of methods and tools aimed at producing technically valid projects in the mechanical industrial sector: conceptual design of overall architectures, evaluation and critical selection of design variants with a total life cycle, prototyping and experimental validation (design of experiments), decomposition into components for the manufacturing and detail of the construction elements (design for manufacturing and assembly, design for tolerance, etc.)

Automotive design:
Investigation of the process for the reasoned and innovative selection of technical and design solutions necessary for the conception, development, optimization, production and assembly of vehicles and systems through the systematic use of rational methods and intensive assistance of tools for geometric modeling, functional simulation, virtual prototyping, calculation and optimization of tolerance chains and collaborative management of product documentation. Development and prototyping of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and applications for autonomous driving.

Design for Robotic Manufacturing:
Investigation of the main problems concerning the design of flexible, reconfigurable and collaborative robotic systems, through the implementation and use of tools for behavioral simulation and off-line programming and through the development and application of artificial vision methodologies and techniques and adaptive compensation of mechanical systems. Implementation of design methods and strategies aimed at the production of prototypes and flexible robotic systems for the manipulation, feeding of production lines and machining centers, assembly and execution of high-precision mechanical machining.
